Plantar Fasciitis Treatment London ON | Pro Function Integrative Health

The Comprehensive London Guide to Plantar Fasciitis: From Pain to Performance

Introduction: Why Heel Pain is More Than Just a Foot Problem

If you are reading this, you likely experienced a sharp, stabbing sensation. in your heel the moment your feet hit the floor this morning. Perhaps you’ve already spent hours searching for “plantar fasciitis treatment near me” or looking for a “podiatrist near me” in London, Ontario.

Additionally, Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common orthopedic complaints, affecting runners, healthcare workers at LHSC, and weekend walkers on the Thames Valley Parkway alike. However, many people treat the symptom (the pain) without ever addressing the cause (the biomechanics). At Pro Function Integrative Health, we believe that long-term relief requires an integrative approach that looks at the entire kinetic chain—from your toes to your hips.

1. Understanding the Anatomy of the Plantar Fascia

To understand why it hurts, you have to understand the “windlass mechanism.” The plantar fascia is a thick, fibrous band of connective tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot. It connects your heel bone (calcaneus) to your toes and creates the arch of your foot.

Its primary job is shock absorption. Every time you take a step, the fascia stretches and recoils. However, if the load exceeds the tissue’s capacity, tiny micro-tears develop. In a healthy body, these tears heal overnight. In a body with poor biomechanics, the tears accumulate, leading to chronic inflammation and the debilitating “first-step” pain characteristic of the condition.

2. Searching for a “Podiatrist Near Me”? Why the Professional Matters

When Londoners search for a “podiatrist near me,” they are looking for a foot specialist. At Pro Function, we offer a unique advantage through our Certified Pedorthists (C. Ped (C)).

While podiatrists focus on the medical and surgical side of foot care, Pedorthists are specialists in footwear and orthotics for plantar fasciitis. Because Pro Function is an integrative clinic, our Pedorthists work directly with our Physiotherapists and Chiropractors. This means your foot specialist isn’t working in a vacuum—they are coordinating with the professional who is stretching your calves and strengthening your glutes.

3. The Truth About Orthotics for Plantar Fasciitis

You’ve likely seen the gel inserts at the local pharmacy. While these provide temporary cushioning, they rarely provide a permanent solution. Here is why custom orthotics for plantar fasciitis at Pro Function are different:

The Problem with Over-the-Counter (OTC) Inserts

OTC inserts are “one size fits most.” If you have a high arch (pes cavus) or a flat foot (pes planus), an OTC insert might actually make your pain worse by putting pressure on the wrong part of the fascia.

The Pro Function Custom Process

  1. Gait Analysis: We don’t just look at your foot; we watch you walk. We look for “over-pronation” (the foot rolling inward) which overstretches the fascia.
  2. 3D Volumetric Casting: We use advanced casting techniques to capture the exact contours of your foot in its corrected position.
  3. Specific Loading: Our orthotics are designed to “offload” the tension specifically where the fascia attaches to the heel.
  4. Footwear Integration: An orthotic is only as good as the shoe it sits in. Our London team helps you select the right footwear for your specific London lifestyle—whether that’s safety boots for a job site or high-performance running shoes.

4. The Integrative Treatment Pathway in London, ON

What makes the “near me” search for Pro Function unique is our multi-disciplinary approach. We don’t believe in “one-and-done” treatments.

Physiotherapy and Movement Prep

Our Physiotherapists focus on the “why.” If your calf muscles (gastrocnemius and soleus) are tight, they pull on the heel, which in turn pulls on the plantar fascia. We use:

  • Manual Therapy: To break up adhesions in the soft tissue.
  • Shockwave Therapy: A gold-standard treatment that uses acoustic pulses to stimulate healing in chronic cases.
  • Targeted Strengthening: Research shows that heavy, slow loading of the fascia (the Rathleff Protocol) is one of the most effective ways to build tissue resilience.

Chiropractic Care and Alignment

Sometimes, foot pain is actually a hip or low back problem. If your pelvis is tilted, you may be putting 60% of your weight on one foot and only 40% on the other. Our Chiropractors ensure that your foundation is level, preventing the “overuse” that leads to fasciitis.

5. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for London Patients

To help you navigate your recovery, we’ve compiled the most common questions our London, Pro Function Integrative Ontario patients ask:

Q: Do I need a doctor’s referral for orthotics in London? A: While you don’t need a referral to see our Pedorthists or Physiotherapists, many extended health insurance plans in Ontario require a prescription from a physician or podiatrist to reimburse you for custom orthotics. We can help guide you through this process.

Q: How long does it take for plantar fasciitis to heal? A: With a dedicated plan involving custom orthotics and physiotherapy, most patients see significant improvement within 4 to 8 weeks. However, “healing” isn’t just about the absence of pain—it’s about building the strength to ensure the pain doesn’t return.

Q: Is “near me” convenience important for treatment? A: Absolutely. Consistency is key to recovery. Pro Function has three locations across London:

  • Downtown: Ideal for those working in the core or at the University.
  • South London: Serving the South London and White Oaks communities.
  • West London: Located conveniently for Byron, Oakridge, and Komoka residents.

6. The 2026 Approach: Technology and Excellence

In 2026, we utilize the latest in biomechanical technology. From digital pressure mapping to laser-guided orthotic manufacturing, we ensure that every millimeter of your support is calculated. We don’t use generic templates; we use data-driven solutions tailored to the Londoner who wants to stay active.

7. Actionable Steps You Can Take Today

While you wait for your appointment at Pro Function, here are three things you can do to manage the pain:

  1. The Frozen Water Bottle Roll: Roll your foot over a frozen water bottle for 10 minutes in the evening. This provides both massage and cold therapy to reduce inflammation.
  2. Avoid Barefoot Walking: Even inside your home, wear a supportive sandal or shoe. Walking barefoot on hardwood or tile puts maximum strain on the fascia.
  3. The Morning Towel Stretch: Before you even get out of bed, use a towel to pull your toes toward your shin. This “pre-stretches” the fascia before it takes your full body weight.

Conclusion: Reclaiming Your Function

If you’re an athlete, at any level, you’ll want to meet Brooke.  Brooke Edwardson’s resume and skillset with athletes is extensive, and recently she added to her resume with a Masters in Advanced Health Care Practice in Sports and Exercise Medicine (AHCP-SEM) from Western University.   While in the program,  Brooke focused on all aspects of delivering comprehensive sports medical coverage for a wide variety of venues.  Additionally, she completed research on ACL-related injuries based on playing surface types in collaboration with several sports medicine and surgical physicians.  Brooke says the experience gave her one-of-a-kind insight into the risks, prevention strategies, and  keys to post-ACL surgical rehabilitation at the highest of levels.

Having originally graduated with a Masters of Physiotherapy from Western, Brooke has quickly developed into one fo London’s brightest and most dynamic sports physiotherapists. Brooke sees patients both on and off the field and when in clinic, she chooses to treat at Pro Function’s sports injury clinic due to the fact that the facility has 40,000 sq ft of turf and two weight-training areas which allows her to really challenge her patients as they return to activity/sport.

Professionally, Brooke has worked in various formats with Skate Canada, the Toronto Rock, at both the Canada Games and the Ontario Summer Games, with the Toronto Triathlon, St George Rugby, Great Lake Canadians (GLC) Baseball, and right here in London as the lead physiotherapist with FC London. Additionally, Brooke works as a consultant for GM Canada and feels the physicality and endurance required with line-side work mimics many of the soft tissue injuries commonly associated with the training errors seen in athletes.

Outside of the clinic, Brooke loves finding creative ways to stay active and is up for the challenge of trying out a new sport or skill.  She enjoys running, rock climbing, hiking, water sports, and of course soccer!  She also loves to travel and spend time with family and friends.
